IN MEMORIAM · STEVE IRWIN · 1962 — 2006

He taught the world to love what it feared.

Steve Irwin

The Crocodile Hunter. The greatest conservationist the world has ever seen, and one of the finest reptile handlers who ever lived. He lit the fire for an entire generation of keepers — and made the world fall in love with the animals it had been taught to fear, proving that understanding, not conquest, was always the whole point.

Conservation is everything — it is what he instilled in us, and it is what we have to carry forward. It is our responsibility, as the people who keep these animals, to take the time to truly understand them, to learn them, and to teach the world that they are not evil, ugly monsters, but amazing creatures to be admired, loved, and cherished.

That is the standard Citadel Culebra carries forward: not spectacle, but understanding. Not fear, but respect. We don’t invoke his name as a credential — we hold it as a reminder of what this work is really for.
