Culebra Wildlife Alliance & Crocodile Rescue Program

Global alliance + crocodile rescue.

Culebra Wildlife Alliance

The global alliance that ties Citadel Culebra to habitat protection, anti-poaching, relocation, and policy work across the world — plus a dedicated crocodile rescue program bringing displaced, surrendered, and seized crocodilians into expert care, for life. When there is nowhere else for these animals to go, this is where they land.

The Zambezi River Delta.

Our main project right now. In the Zambezi River Delta, fishing villages live shoulder-to-shoulder with one of the densest wild crocodile populations on earth — and people depend on the water every day to eat. That dependence, and the overfishing it forces, puts families directly in harm’s way. The Culebra Wildlife Alliance is building a program to change that on two fronts at once: protect people from crocodile attacks, and protect the crocodiles from the conflict that follows.

Crocodile-attack prevention

On-the-ground infrastructure and safer access to water to keep villagers out of high-risk encounters with wild crocodiles.

Field research

Resourcing real crocodile research across the Delta — population, movement, and human-conflict data at a scale it hasn't had before.

Infrastructure & real estate

Bridging infrastructure and real-estate support so villages aren't reliant on the river — easing the overfishing that drives people into the water and into danger.

We first saw this crisis through Ivan Carter and Carter’s Wild, whose work brought it to light — and we’re also getting involved in the anti-poaching efforts Ivan and his alliance lead across the continent.

We’re in active development and plan to go live with the program over the next couple of months — before the end of the year.

The wider work

Habitat protection

Backing the protection and restoration of the places these animals actually live.

Anti-poaching

Supporting the people and programs fighting the illegal wildlife trade on the ground.

Relocation & policy

Relocation work and the legislative fights that decide whether a species has a future.

Crocodile rescue

A dedicated program taking in displaced, surrendered, and seized crocodilians — expert care, for life.

The Culebra Wildlife Alliance is the global conservation arm connecting Citadel Culebra to partners worldwide. Program details, partners, and intake information for the Crocodile Rescue Program are published as they come online.
